Police Chief Calls on Drivers to help enforce Road Safety and Security

Director of Community Policing Unit(CPU) of the Ghana Police Service, C/SUPT. Rev. Laurencia Wilhelmina Akorli, has urged drivers and ‘mates’ of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union(GPRTU) -Achimota Terminal- to collaborate with the Police to ensure safety and security on our roads and bus station.

She made these statements at a sensitization event to educate public transport drivers on security issues and information sharing.

‘’Be security conscious and report any unusual elements to the appropriate authorities. When you give the Police information, your identity is protected. It is prudent that you report criminals who might use the bus stations and terminals as their hideout,’’ she explained.

She encouraged the workers of the station to be vigilante.

‘’If you see any bus that hasn’t been here before, you have the right to question the driver because at the end of the day, if anything bad happens here, it affects you all,” she said.

She touched on indiscipline, which happens to be one of the causes of road accident.

“Instead of bribing your way through road traffic offences, it will be wiser and far better to just do what the law requires of you and use the money for something better,’’ she advised.

She listed three of the most important things they should always have on them as drivers, namely; driver’s license, road worthy certificate and car insurance.

The drivers and mates were also encouraged to avoid driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, which impairs drivers’ ability to drive safely, puts the lives of passengers and other road users at risk. They were finally entreated to wear seats belts at all times when driving and not only when they are approaching a police stop.
