Former Black Stars player, Nii Odartey Lamptey, has said that Asamoah Gyan should have maintain his decision to retire from the senior national team.

Gyan was expected to lead the Black Stars in their bid to end their 37-year wait for the AFCON trophy in Egypt but decided to rule himself out.

Gyan stated that he has been asked by head coach Kwesi Appiah to relinquish the captaincy and serve in a different capacity ahead of the tournament. Due to this, Gyan retired from the national team. But few days later, the president of the land,Nana Akufu-Addo, phoned him to come back to the national team because the nation needed his service in the upcoming AFCON tournament to which Gyan rescind his decision.

This decision did not go down well with Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko player, Nii Odartey Lamptey
and has described the decision as not a good one.

Speaking with Ohene Brenya-Bampoe on Happy FM’s Anopa Bosuo Sports, Odartey Lamptey said “For me, I think Gyan should have maintained his decision. Who are u to disregard the president? No matter what you will give the president that kind of necessary respect. But my problem here is if something happens in camp, they will use it against Asamoah. That’s why I think he should have maintain his first decision by not coming back to the Black Stars team so that we move forward. If any fight occurs in camp, people will rise concerns about him. You know Ghanaians already so that’s my fear for him,” he said.

Asamoah Gyan is Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals since his debut in 2003.
The Kayserispor ace is also Africa’s leading top scorer at the World Cup with six goals in three tournaments.
