Ghana’s performance at AFCON 2019 the worst in history- Former Black Stars player

Former Hearts of Oak player and Head Coach, Mohammed Polo says that the performance by Black Stars at this years’ Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt is the worst so far in the history of the senior national team.

Speaking on Happy FM’s ‘Wamputu Sports’ with Joe Debrah, the former Ghana international said, “Although in 1984 Ghana didn’t perform well, this years’ performance by the Black Stars in the AFCON is the worst performance of the team so far. They had the opportunity to win the trophy but they failed.”

He added that the current Black Stars management team must do the honorable thing by resigning from their positions as soon as possible.“The Technical team should know that they have failed Ghanaians woefully so they should honorably resign.”

Kwesi Appiah has come under a barrage of attacks after the Black Stars suffered their worst Afcon campaign in over a decade in Egypt.

Black Stars, who had reached the semi-finals of the last six tournaments, crashed out at the 1/16th stage as they lost to Tunisia.

The Carthage Eagles eliminated Appiah’s men 5-4 on penalties and went on to finish fourth.

Before the tournament, Appiah’s contract was extended but with a clause that he will be sacked if Ghana fails to win the trophy.

His current deal will expire in December.

Appiah is in his second stint as Black Stars coach as he was reappointed in 2017.

His first stint ended in 2014 after Ghana failed to qualify from group stages at the World Cup in Brazil.
