WASSCE 2019: 65.31% passed maths as WAEC withholds results of 48,000 candidates

WAEC has officially released the results for the 2019 WASSCE. A total of 346, 094 candidates registered for the examination. The males were 170,857 (49.37%) and the females were 175, 237 (50.63%). A total of 2,322 (0.67%) were absent from the WASSCE.

The performance in the 4-Core Subjects are:

English Language:
167, 733 (48.96%) got A1-C6; 100,781 (29.42%) got D7-E8 and 74,038 (21.61%) got F9.

Mathematics:
223,737 (65.31%) got A1-C6; 72,408 (21%) got D7-E8 and 46,384 (13.54%) got F9.

Integrated Science:
216,095 (63.17%) got A1-C6; 91,151 (27%) got D7-E8; and 34,825 (10.18%) had F9.

Social Studies:
257,838 (75.43%) had A1-C6; 52,983 (15.50%) got D7-E8; and 30,970 (9.06%) had F9.

Withheld Results
The entire results of 48,855 (14.12%) candidates have been withheld pending investigations of various alleged misconducts.

Improvement from Last Year
The entire 2019 WASSCE performance is better than that of 2018, especially in the 4-core subjects from A1-C6. Mathematics saw improvement from 38.33% to 65.31%. English Language improved from 46.91% to 48.96%. Integrated Science improved from 50.52% to 63.17%. And Social Studies saw improvement from 73.27%

Factors that have accounted for the improvement in 2019 WASSCE results released by WAEC

The change of the school academic calendar from trimester system to a Semester system which has increased contact hours between teachers and students from 6hours to 7 hours daily. It moved the total contact hours from 1,080 to 1,134.

  1. Change of WASSCE period from Feb to June to April to June to give candidates more time to cover the syllabus.
  2. Intervention for Final years: Re-opened school on 5th Jan 2019 instead of scheduled date in March for 2nd Semester .
  3. The payment of academic intervention money to teachers including form 3 teachers.
  4. Periodic meetings between the Ministry and Heads of schools (CHASS) – more especially low performing schools.
