It’s been almost 48 hours since the Chief Executive Officer of embattled gold dealership firm, Menzgold Ghana Limited, Nana Appiah Mensah, requested the Attorney General’s Department to assist him retrieve a $39 million debt owed his firm by Horizon Royal Diamond in Dubai.

According to him, the assistance by the AG’s department is the only way he’ll be able to settle outstanding liabilities to his thousands of clients in and outside the country.

Speaking to The Ghana Report on whether the AG’s department is considering the request put forward by Nana Appiah Mensah on Monday, Deputy Attorney General, Godfred Dame said the Attorney General herself may be the one to comment on the issue.

“I am not in the position to comment on the Menzgold issue, call the Attorney General.” Mr Dame said to  in a phone interview.

Some legal brains have said that Nana Appiah Mensah needs to go through the legal process in order for his personal and company accounts to be unfrozen. They add that the Attorney General’s department remains under no obligation whatsoever to accede to the requests of the embattled businessman.

BACKGROUND

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Menzgold Ghana Limited, Nana Appiah Mensah has asked the Attorney General’s Department to help him retrieve a $39 million debt owed his firm by Horizon Royal Diamond in Dubai.

According to him, retrieving the money will help him pay outstanding premiums and dividends of hundreds of customers of the now defunct gold dealership company.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra Monday morning, Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly implored government to engage international law and diplomatic relations to enable him retrieve the said funds in order to service his debt to customers.

He explained “All companies worldwide have liabilities in its books and so do Menzgold. Business in summary is all about owing and being owed. We at Menzgold are committed and do express our willingness to service our debts portfolios to our customers and business associates as soon as we can with a given opportunity.”

Nana Appiah also wants government to consider a highly imperative request to unfreeze his personal accounts as well as those of his companies to enable him meet his liabilities domestically.

“To unfreeze our Companies and my personal bank accounts and assets for us to utilize these as vehicles to get productive in other to meet our liabilities, owed to our customers and some business associates in our bid to resolve our liabilities immediately. As of now, Brew Marketing Consult, Menzgold and I cannot credit or debit any bank account in Ghana. This is why it is highly imperative to consider this kind request, as I believe, government shares in our resolve and would do all that which is needful in our quest to satisfy the populace, who are our customers,” he said.
