The Ghana WheelChair Tennis as part of its efforts to promote and grow the sports across the country has launched the Wheelchair Tennis in Abor and Cape Coast.

The event was first launched at the St.Theresa’s Vocational Training Center in Abor, in the Volta Region and later at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

It was launched under the theme, “let’s play Wheelchair Tennis in schools and rehabilitation centres”.

The aim of the project is to introduce wheelchair tennis to children with disability in schools and to recruit junior players who can play for fun and also develop their interest in becoming professional wheelchair tennis players.

The expansion of the wheelchair tennis program also forms part of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Wheelchair Tennis Development Fund 2019 Project in developing and promoting Wheelchair Tennis in developing countries.

The Headmaster of St. Theresa’s Vocational School, Rev Fr. Emmanuel Johnson was delighted over the introduction of wheelchair Tennis in the school because it was going to serve as a source of entertainment, a means of exercising as well as develop their ability in sports.

At Cape Coast the launch of the Wheelchair Tennis was followed with a two- Day Wheelchair Tennis Beginners Training Clinic which had about 50 Persons with Physical Disability Athletes and two coaches from the region attending.

“We are happy to have wheelchair tennis launched in Central region, the players are happy and determined to train to make the region the hub for wheelchair tennis in Ghana” – Charles Hezekiel Obo, Assistant Captain, Cape Coast Disability Sports.

The team from Ghana Wheelchair Tennis who embarked on the program were Coach Yahya Macaulay, Michael Oteng, Daniel Laryea and Henry Larbi the National Coordinator of Ghana Wheelchair Tennis.
