Inter Allies Technical Director, Willie Klutse says Ghanaian players lack mental toughness in the aspect of penalty shoot-outs.

There has been growing concerns over the inability of Ghanaian players to convert penalty kicks during major tournaments.

Ghana has lost out on a title or qualification due to players’ inability to successfully convert their kicks at major tournaments.

In 2019 the Black Stars exited the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt through penalties as they lost to Tunisia in the Round of 16. The Black Stars B also failed to retain the WAFU Cup after losing on penalties to Senegal in the final and the Black Meteors failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games due to penalties.

Willie Kluste in addressing the issue on Wamputu Sports on Happy FM, said “You need mental toughness and focus to be able to play the penalty kicks.

“We have to urge our coaches to infuse penalty kicks into their coaching programs during their training days at least twice in a week”.

There has been a proposal by the Executive Council to adopts penalty shootouts after a every drawn game in the league as a means to address the issue.
Kluste kicked against the idea by the Executive Council to introduce penalty kicks after every drawn game in the league.

“The idea to introduce penalty kicks in the league after every drawn game will be not be of help and might even compromise the league”.

“The proposal by the Executive Council will not help and it might bring confusion”, he added.
