Chairman for workers of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) Akosombo, Mr. Guggisberg Asante is saying that huge debts owed them by other state enterprises is slowly swallowing the power distributor.
According to him, these debts have prevented the company from effecting some maintenance projects which are very critically to their functionality.
“Some of our machinery were installed as far back as 1956, are very old and need to be changed but we can’t do that because we have no money”, he said.
Speaking on Happy FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ he revealed that there are lines running from Aboadze in the Western region to Mallam in the Greater Accra region with worn out insulators which need to be replaced but “We can’t do anything about them though they pose huge threats all because we lack the money.”

He added that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta Aluminum Company Limited (VALCO) and the Northern Distribution Company (NEDCo) owe them huge sums of money accumulated over the years. “ECG, VALCO and NEDCo do not pay us after we supply them with power. Over the years, their debt has accumulated to huge sums with ECG, VALCO and NEDCo owing us GH₵607million, $32million and GH₵177million respectively.”
”Meanwhile, the ECG takes 80% of our power and pays us so little. So how do they expect us to work effectively and also undertake maintenance works?”, he queried.
