Three people have reportedly been injured after police ‘aimed’ their guns at angry protesters in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region on Monday.

Bullets from armed police hit the three people in the leg, arm, and back.

This was after spontaneous protesters besieged the police station over the callous murder of an Assemblyman last Sunday.

Speaking on Happy Morning Show (HMS), the Volta Regional PRO for the police, Prince Dogbatse was unable to answer a question on what process do the police use to disperse youth on a rampage especially when the police is under attack.

According to him, the police came under attack, vehicles were vandalized and the youth were throwing all sorts of missile at the police but the police only fired some tear gas and gunshot not aiming to hurt the rampaging youth.

He added that whiles the police were under attack, their focus is to get to the bottom of the killing of the Assemblyman which will be the greatest relief of the people in the town.

Gruesome murder

Marcus reportedly struggled with eight robbers who were armed with guns and clubs.
He was subsequently stabbed and shot multiple times, according to reports.

No arrest has so far been made.

The remains of the deceased, also known as Mac-Greenline, has been deposited at the South Tongu district hospital morgue in Sogakope, pending an autopsy.

The assailants, numbering about eight, reportedly stormed the victim’s house wielding guns and cement blocks whilst firing gunshots.

A resident of the area, Maxwell Lukutor, said this was the latest in series of violent crimes reported in the area.

“The issue is that our security is compromised. We have had several attacks from armed robbers and we see a lot of inaction from the police,” he said.

Police give assurances

The Sogakope District Police Commander, DSP Michael Zah, said his outfit was on top of issues in the area.
“Security is not as porous as they [the protesters] are saying. It is a challenging issue which we need to sit with the youth and sort out.”

Meanwhile, calm has returned to Sogakope in the Volta Region following the gruesome murder.
