The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President, Ben Nunoo Mensah says the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was never under pressure to postpone the Tokyo 2022 Olympic Games.

The IOC on Tuesday postponed, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to the summer of 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Ben Nunoo Mensah in an interview with Happy FM stated that the IOC had set up a Task Force in place to monitor the situation to determine if the Games could go ahead as planned.

“The IOC wasn’t under pressure to postpone the Olympics Games. The IOC had set up a task force in February to monitor the Coronavirus”.

“The IOC didn’t want to rush to take a decision on postponing the Olympics Games”.

“We were aware of what was eventually going to happen due to the spread of the virus”.

“At the Executive Board meeting there was an agreement to monitor the situation for two to four weeks which was agreed by most of the Federation Presidents in Africa”

He added that the IOC were also concerned about the safety of athletes and officials ahead of the Games.

“The IOC was not stiff necked on still allowing the Games to go on. They were also concerned about the safety of athletes and officials which led to the postponement last three days”.
