COVID-19: Consulate to launch relief fundraiser for Ghanaians based in US

Head of Information of the Permanent Mission of Ghana to UN, Kofi Ameyaw has disclosed that the Ghanaian consulate in the United States of America is in the process of setting up a fund to support Ghanaians living in the US.

He made this statement on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’.

He said, “The Ghanaian consulate here will soon launch a fundraising platform to help all Ghanaians. The US government has put in place some stimulus packages to support its citizenry but not every Ghanaian is one and eligible to receive support from the government, hence the need for the fund.”

According to him, it has become necessary to set up the COVID-19 relief fund because some Ghanaians in the US have lost their jobs and cannot afford to fend for themselves.

“Some Ghanaians here are suffering a lot because they’ve lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak and this is frustrating. The only people allowed to work and earn income are those categorized under essential services. Everyone else is not working hence no income for them and this is affecting their survival.”

Kofi Ameyaw took the opportunity to assure Ghanaians that things are getting better in the US with less people going to the hospital and more recovering from the coronavirus. He beleieves the virus which is said to be a seasonal one and here to stay with us as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) will go down during the summer.

He also conveyed his condolence to the families of the 3 Ghanains who have lost their lives to the virus.
