Former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko forward, Charles Taylor says the standard of play in the Ghana Premier League(GPL) has fallen juxtaposing it to his era.

The four-time Ghana Premier League winner with Hearts of Oak said, players in the modern era are not serious with the profession and they are also not ready to learn from experienced players.

According to Taylor, players currently playing in the Ghana Premier League should bow their heads in shame for the kind of football they play on the pitch.

Speaking in an interview on Ghana’s number one Sports Station, Happy FM, he said, “We played better football during our time. We were very determined.
If the current players played like us I don’t think we will be watching the European leagues. They need that determination now.

“Compare the likes of Stephen Oduro and Asante Kotoko to how the current team is playing. Now the current generation think they know it all and they are not ready to listen and learn. They shoud feel ashamed playing the game as professionals”, he added.

Veteran Ghanaian Football coach J.E Sarpong also added his voice to Charles Taylor’s comment on the Standard of the league.

The former Asante kotoko and Hearts of Oak coach said, “There is truth in what Charles Taylor said. During his time, the skills displayed the technical know-how of the players was top notch and this current generation lack that. Their skills brought a lot of fans to the stadium.

“During their time players were not in hurry to move outside, there were no player-agents as well. The inter-schools game was effective so we could scout players and train them. The standards have fallen because the players don’t stay for long and move to Europe.

He advised that players and coaches must revert back to the old roots if the want to improve the standard of play in the Ghana league.
