Football didn’t make me rich- Don Bortey

Hearts of Oak legend, Bernard Don Bortey has admitted that he couldn’t make a lot of money in football despite his illustrious career for both club and country.

Don Bortey is regarded as one of the best players to grace the domestic scene in Ghana’s football history. His time with Hearts of Oak saw him win a lot of laurels including the 2005 CAF Confederation Cup.

The Humble Lion, as he is affectionately called says betrayal and exploitation from agents is what has made him lose a lot of money during his active days.

“I didn’t get money in football because the people who managed me did not do well. They were just milking me. I remember I had a manager called Mr Quarshie, who bought me a car eventhough I didn’t know how to drive. Hearts paid me GHc 1,500 at that time but I never saw or received that money”, he told Ohene-Bampoe Brenya on Happy Sports on Happy 98.9FM.

“A lot of people have cheated me and if i want to recall those moments I will be dead by now”, he added.

He also recounted his loan deal to Israeli club Bnei Sakhnin, where he was supposed to have made about $50,000 including signing on fees and wages.

“When I played in Israel I was supposed to have received $3,000 every month and a signing on fee of $30,000 but I never received those monies. I only received just one month of my salary before I terminated the contract”, he stated.
