Educationist warns gov't against reopening of schools

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has revealed that the President is in talks with stakeholders on reopening schools.

He mentioned in an Instagram live Q&A session with Ghanaians that Government will put in place measures such as regular testing and equipping students with nose masks to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

However, a member of the Ghana Education Forum, Jeffery Kabutey Ocansey, has kicked against the decision, stating that rushing into the reopening of schools will be disastrous for Ghana.

In an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, he commented: “I was scared at the news. All over the world, countries that wanted to go back to normal have locked down again. We have different categories of students and anyone you allow to go to school will bring problems”.

He reasoned that children are not ‘miniature adults’ and observing the way they handle their socks and handkerchiefs, they cannot be trusted with handling their nose masks.

“How will a 4-year old observe social distancing? They may even remove their nose masks. The truth is social distancing will be defeated and the nose masks will be removed”, he added.

He furthered that taking such a decision may in the long run, burden our health facilities.
