Deputy National Communication Director of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Benjamin Nsiah has accused the ruling government of wooing and deceiving Ghanaians with various relief amidst the country’s fight against COVID-19.

According to him, the government is building castles in the air and he, cannot understand why.

Speaking in an interview on Happy 98.9 FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show, he said, “the government’s action during this COVID-19 has only been to show off and nothing more.”

He noted that the government has made a tall list of promises as actions of relief to citizens amidst the fight against COVID-19 only to default on a lot of them whilst some were a right to be enjoyed by Ghanaians.

Benjamin indicated that the preseident’s promise to frontline workers has not been fulfilled. “The president promised frontline health workers will enjoy 50 percent pay increment and some tax exemptions starting from March, 2020 but this has not been realised. He even promised to recruit more health workers to support the fight against the pandemic but these were all for show.”

He furthered, Ghanaians should not even have rejoiced over the reduction in utility tarrifs because it was something we deserved. “I am suprised the ruling government made a show of this when it was in our rights to enjoy these reductions.”

Explaining why he would have been disappointed if these charges were not reduced, he revealed that because crude prices had fallen, it automatically affected the tarrifs on these utilities. “The government made a show of the reduction on electricity tarrifs when it was something we all deserved. We use crude in generating power in the country. And if their prices drop, it positively affects the cost of electricity,” he reiterated.

The CPP communicator asserted that the state was only rendered useless in the COVID-19 fight because the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) wanted to look good to the citizenry. “Instead of the state being responsible for the food distribution and education during this period. The political parties were the ones distributing food.”

What saddened him the most was the fact that the government gave money and resources meant for public education by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), to local government authorities who mismanaged these funds.

“The NPP has done nothing to deserve praise,” he said.
