Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Anthony Boateng has indicated that failing either Mathematics or English language at the BECE level is no more a barrier to placements in second cycle institutions.

English and Math have for some time in the Ghanaian educational curriculum been a reason for which a lot of Junior High School leavers never got a place into Senior High Schools (SHS).

Preview to this information, some Ghanaians have spoken against such a system which cuts short the dreams of technically brilliant students as they cannot further their education.

In an interview on Happy FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show with Okatakyie Kwame-Afrifa, the deputy director-general of GES responding to claims that the service neglects JHS students who fail in either Math or English access to secondary education said, “We should all be patient in this issue because English has become our national language and therefore we must have a means of communication since we speak different languages in Ghana.”

“In recent times if you have monitored our placement process, we have stopped denying students who don’t do well in English or Math getting placed into secondary school. The only bad situation is to fail both papers but if you fail in only one, you will be given a school”.

“The reason why this was being done was to limit the number of pupils who enrol into our secondary schools due to infrastructural constraints”, he added
