Information reaching Happy 98.9FM indicates that three people have sustained injuries from gunshots during the incident of road blockage by secessionists of Western Togoland.

Happy FM’s Volta Regional correspondent, Ivan Midorse, speaking to Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show disclosed, “There were gunshots and some individuals have been wounded. This is from the naval base, when they went there to disperse the crowd and they were not corresponding. The Western Togolanders were not corresponding and according to sources, the warning shots were toward the ground so the bullets spread on the ground to hit some people’s legs. Three people have been injured in the legs and have been sent to the Sogakope district hospital”.

He noted that the Navy was present to support the police in controlling the crowd as the police could not do so on their own.

“There was police presence but it had to take the Naval Base from Nterkpor to control the crowd but the police couldn’t do anything so they were supportive”, he added.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of South Tongu district, Emmanuel Louis Agamah, speaking to the press on the issue confirmed this news when he said: “Just this dawn, we had a call that a group which calls itself Western Togolanders came into my district .
About hundred youths mobilized themselves and blocked the road with lorry tyres and road blocks. We had to call in the Navy from Agorta to come and restore the situation on the ground. When they came, they gave several warning shots to disperse the crowd but they were adamant to move. This prompted them to fire shots into the crowd wounding three of them who are currently receiving medical attention”.

Background

Members of the Volta separatist, the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) on Friday dawn blocked some roads in the Volta Region of Ghana.

The HSGF, a group championing the secession of parts of Ghana along the border with Togo, declared independence for the territory they call ‘Western Togoland’ on November 16, 2019.

Their action of blocking the roads on Friday morning was part of their agitations for independence from Ghana.

Their action caused heavy traffic on the Accra-Sogakope road. However the DCE assured that at the moment, “vehicular movement is under control”.
