Former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Joseph Yamin has indicated that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region, Chairman Wontumi never contributed to the 2016 victory of the party.

According to him, Wontumi coincidentally found himself at a point where everything had already been set in motion for him leading to the 2016 general elections.

“Wontumi did nothing in the NPP’s 2016 victory. Wontumi talks more than he can do and that amounts to nothing. But coincidentally, the talk met with some discouragement within the opponent with support from some lies and that has made Wontumi think the way he does,” he said.

Proving his point further, he downplayed the analytical and critical thinking skills of Wontumi with his recent behaviour at the just ended voter registration exercise.

“What is said about you if as a party chairman you pop champagne to celebrate when you don’t meet your registration target in the just ended voter registration exercise? Wontumi speaks just like that without any analytical consideration,” Yamin said.

He reiterated that Wontumi did not analyse the data recorded at the voter registration and is still speaking in a vacuum. “You have over-hyped Wontumi like you have Nana Addo. Nana Addo should have not insisted we do a new register.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says provisional figures from the just-ended voters’ registration exercise show a reduction of about 57,000 voters in the Ashanti Region as compared to the figures in the old register.

The party, however, says the decrease on the voter roll enhances their chances of increasing their fortunes in the upcoming elections.

The region has over the years, proven loyal to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as over 76% of its votes in the 2016 elections went in favour of the governing party.
