The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other parties in Ghana to join them in condemning the action by the Western Togoland separatist group.

General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, in a press conference at the Alisa Hotel today, disclosed that the party is already in talks with some parties to hold a joint press conference on the issue. However, he added that the NPP will appreciate it if the NDC joins in this effort.

“We are calling on all political parties to join us condemn this act. Very soon we will do a joint press conference. I hope the NDC joins us in condemning this. This is because they benefit from all that parliament offers for parliamentarians. All we need is to join forces and go against this”, he said.

Meanwhile, John Boadu questioned why after three days of the incidence in the Volta Region, the biggest opposition party had remained silent on the issue. In his concluding remarks, however, he gave them the benefit of doubt when he said, “Probably, they are putting something together on the issue”.

On Friday, armed men demanding the secession of Western Togoland from Ghana blockaded major entry points to the Volta region of Ghana.

A previous unsuccessful attempt to declare Western Togoland independent from Ghana took place in 2017. In March 2020, around 80 members of the separatist group were detained for protesting the arrest of seven leaders of the Homeland Study Group Foundation. The charges were later dropped.
