By: Fafa Gbeho (Head of HR, Global Media Alliance)

After 10 years of exploring various career paths, I found my calling in Human Resources, a profession that often finds you rather than the other way around. Although I initially hesitated, I soon realised HR is a strategic role that plays a crucial part in organisational success.

Many misunderstand HR, thinking it’s solely about fulfilling staff demands or handling administrative tasks. While important, these are only facets of a broader responsibility that includes conflict resolution, strategic management, and navigating complex labour regulations.

My journey began when I applied to Global Media Alliance, seeking a PR role. Instead, I was hired in human resources due to my vast experience in HR, General Administration and Management. This role opened my eyes to the true breadth of HR. With support from the Irene Asare Tullow – HR mentorship program in 2018, which I was privileged to participate in for Thirteen (13) months, and the CIHRM professional programme which I started from Level one, I developed the skills needed to excel. CIHRM’s hands-on coursework was instrumental in shaping my understanding of HR beyond traditional functions.

Working in media and communications, where hours are unpredictable and implementing policies that align with labour regulations has been challenging, yet rewarding. Every day presents a learning opportunity, and I am grateful to GMA and CIHRM for fostering my growth.

As we celebrate HR Professionals Day, I want to share a few lessons for upcoming professionals:

  1. Your Word is Your Bond: Building trust through clear, honest communication is essential. What you say, and how you say it, defines your reputation.
  2. Integrity Matters: Be consistent and truthful in your interactions, even when it’s tough. This earns you respect from others.
  3. Embrace Continuous Learning: Engage with colleagues across departments to gain fresh perspectives and new ideas. HR should also embrace data-driven metrics to guide decisions on employee satisfaction, retention, and performance.
  4. Adapt to Change: HR professionals must be open to change, especially with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). Embrace innovation, and make it work for your organisation.
  5. Emotional Intelligence is Key: Understanding your emotions and those of others helps you lead and navigate workplace dynamics more effectively. It enhances leadership potential at all levels.
  6. Expect Disappointments: Not every suggestion or decision will be appreciated, and that’s okay. The ultimate goal is the success and sustainability of the organisation.
  7. Be Ethical: Uphold moral principles in all your decisions, even in difficult situations. Document your advice when necessary to safeguard yourself and the company.

Finally, I owe my achievements to continuous professional development, my HR team at GMA, and the support of GMA and CIHRM. On this HR Professionals season, I extend my gratitude to all who have impacted me along the way and wish HR practitioners worldwide, a Happy HR Professionals Day 2024!
