Ghana has successfully hosted the 7th African Petroleum Producers’ Organization (APPO) National Oil Companies CEOs Meeting, bringing together chief executives from nineteen African oil-producing nations for two days of strategic discussions in the capital.
The prestigious gathering, held from 14-15 September, positioned Ghana at the centre of Africa’s energy conversation as chief executives and senior officials from across the continent converged in Accra to address critical challenges facing the petroleum sector.
Ghana’s Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, graced the occasion, underscoring the country’s commitment to fostering continental cooperation in the energy sector. The summit was hosted by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and took place alongside Africa Oil Week 2025.
During the meeting, Ghana’s influence in African energy affairs was further highlighted when GNPC Chief Executive, Kwame Ntow Amoah was appointed as the new Chairman of APPO, taking over from Bienvenido Nguema Envo of Equatorial Guinea’s GEPetrol.
“The fact that Ghana has been chosen to host this flagship gathering demonstrates our country’s growing importance in Africa’s energy landscape,” said Mr Amoah during the handover ceremony. “This forum has served as our instrument to respond not individually but as a community to the challenges facing our industry.”
The Accra summit brought together representatives from APPO’s eighteen member countries, including Algeria, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Libya, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa.
Delegates engaged in comprehensive discussions on regional collaboration, innovation, and sustainability in Africa’s petroleum sector. The meeting focused on delivering practical outcomes on shared infrastructure development, local content requirements, innovation initiatives, and investment opportunities across member states.
The choice of Ghana as host nation reflects the country’s strategic position in West Africa’s energy sector and its commitment to promoting intra-African cooperation. Ghana’s petroleum industry has grown significantly in recent years, with the country emerging as an important player in regional energy markets.
The timing of the summit alongside Africa Oil Week 2025 maximised networking opportunities and strategic dialogue amongst continental energy leaders. This coordination enhanced Ghana’s profile as a preferred destination for major energy conferences and business gatherings.
Speaking about the broader implications of hosting such gatherings, industry observers noted that Ghana’s selection demonstrates confidence in the country’s infrastructure, security, and business environment. The successful hosting of the APPO meeting reinforces Ghana’s credentials as a hub for continental energy dialogue.
The outgoing APPO Chairman, Mr Nguema Envo, praised Ghana’s hospitality and the quality of arrangements made for the gathering. He described APPO as “a prime platform to share experiences and ideas for managing the ever-dynamic oil and gas industry” and commended Ghana for creating an environment conducive to productive discussions.
Discussions during the two-day summit addressed key challenges facing African petroleum producers, including financing constraints, technology requirements, workforce development, and climate considerations amid the global energy transition. Delegates explored collaborative approaches to these challenges and identified opportunities for enhanced cooperation.
The meeting also examined ways to strengthen the Africa Energy Bank initiative, deepen trading relationships amongst member countries, and develop practical mechanisms for enhanced intra-African cooperation in the petroleum sector.
Ghana’s successful hosting of the APPO gathering comes as the country continues to develop its own petroleum sector whilst positioning itself as a gateway for energy investment in West Africa. The country’s stable political environment, improving infrastructure, and strategic location have made it an attractive destination for energy sector meetings and investments.
The APPO National Oil Companies CEOs Meeting represents one of the most significant energy gatherings hosted by Ghana in recent years, bringing together decision-makers responsible for managing billions of dollars in continental petroleum resources.
As the meeting concluded, delegates expressed appreciation for Ghana’s hospitality and the quality of discussions facilitated by the host arrangements. The success of the Accra gathering is expected to enhance Ghana’s prospects for hosting future continental energy events.
*About the Meeting*
The APPO National Oil Companies CEOs Meeting is a flagship platform that brings together chief executives from Africa’s national oil companies to discuss strategic issues affecting the continent’s petroleum industry. This was the seventh edition of the annual gathering.
