As the Akwatia by-election set for September 2, 2025, approaches, Ghana’s Small Arms Commission has issued a firm warning stating that anyone attempting to carry weapons to the polls will be arrested.
Speaking with Bismark Brown on Epa Hoa Daben on Happy98.9FM, the Deputy Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (PPME), Gyebi Asante emphasized that the election zone is a strictly weapon-free area. This includes not only firearms but also tasers, pepper spray, knives, and other potentially harmful tools.
The directive comes in response to rising concerns about political violence and the misuse of arms during elections.
The Commission is working closely with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to ensure a peaceful and lawful voting process.
Already, security operations in the Akwatia District have led to the arrest of six individuals including a Chinese national for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Citizens are urged to exercise their rights peacefully, and any breach of this directive will be met with swift legal consequences.
