The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has outlined significant strides made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in the fisheries sector, including the near-completion of the Anomabo Fisheries College in the Central Region.

Speaking at the Regional Townhall Meeting and Exhibition in Cape Coast on Tuesday, October 15, the Minister revealed that although the project was initiated in 2013 under former President John Dramani Mahama, it stalled until President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo through the Fisheries Ministry, revived and advanced its development.

“The administration block, laboratory, lecture block, hostels, fish pond, and treatment plant are all completed. What remains are the roads, staff bungalows, and lecturers’ bungalows, which are 97% done,” she said, expressing optimism that the college will be fully operational by 2025.

She disclosed that the college will operate under the University of Cape Coast, offering diploma certificates and short training programs for fishermen during close seasons to improve their skills and knowledge in modern fishing practices.

In addition to infrastructure development, the Minister highlighted the government’s efforts to support fishers, stating that the Ministry has distributed 6,652 outboard motors, 6,148 fishing nets to fishermen, 6,000 wire mesh, and 3,710 chest freezers to fishmongers across the country.

These interventions, she emphasized, are part of the government’s broader commitment to enhancing the fisheries sector, improving livelihoods, and ensuring sustainable practices.
