25-year-old Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie, a contract employee at the Absa bank in Osu has been arrested by the police for embezzling about GHc1.2 million from a customer’s account.

The money stolen by the suspect is said to have belonged to a judge and a previous Inspector General of Police, both of whom are deceased.

Emmanuel is said to have carried out this fraudulent act using his boss’ password by carefully recording his employer using a mobile phone while she entered the password.

The transfer of funds from the account took about two months as he used to transfer some of the funds to his account in another bank, his girlfriend’s account, the account of his 17 accomplices in various banks and their mobile money numbers.

Some of his accomplices who were also arrested, brought before a court and held in detention were eventually granted bail.

The banker is accused of several offenses including conspiracy and theft amongst others.

It is alleged that, he used the stolen funds to purchase an iPhone 14 Pro Max, a Toyota Camry and before his arrest intended to flee with his girlfriend to Dubai.

They were caught by the Ghana Immigration Service and subsequently handed over to the police.
