The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Odododiodio constituency in the Greater Accra Region has blamed the Member of Parliament for the area Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye for the current unrest in the constituency.
According to the party, Nii Lante Vanderpuye is inciting the NDC youth to embark on violent activities in the area.
Their comments come after a peace walk in Jamestown over the weekend turned chaotic.
Supporters of the NPP and NDC in a circulating video on social media were seen throwing bottles and hauling stones and insults at each other in the Odododiodio constituency on Sunday morning.
Addressing the media, the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Odododiodio constituency, Nii Lante Bannerman said various stakeholders in the community must intervene for peace to prevail.
“We are however not the least surprised by these acts of violence, considering the fact that in 2016, after a successful campaign launch at the famous Bukom Square, this same MP, led his thugs to go on a vandalisation spree in the constituency.
On the back of yet another successful walk in honour of the memory of NPP Odododiodio Youth Organiser, the late William Walters Nii Ofei Bruce Tagoe aka Ras on Saturday, the MP and his boys came running riot again without any provocation.
It, therefore, goes without saying that these happenings in the constituency are explicitly orchestrated by the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) whose persona and character depicts violence.
This was the same person who as the NDC Parliamentary Candidate in 2004 was cited for electoral fraud and violence and injuncted from contesting that year’s election. The constituency from then on experienced peaceful electioneering campaigns and elections until he resurfaced in 2012 to contest the NDC primaries which again was characterised by the violence he masterminded.”
He also called the police to arrest persons involved in the violent clash.
Meanwhile, Police in Accra has mounted a search for persons alleged to have initiated yesterday’s disturbances in the Odododiodio constituency.
Clashes between sympathizers of the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress during a peace walk left 15 persons injured.
Videos of the incident which went viral on social media showed the two sides raining insults and hurling stones at each other.
