MMTL redirects buses to ease Accra transport crunch

MMTL redirects buses to ease Accra transport crunch Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) has reduced some of its intercity bus services to focus on intracity operations in Accra, aiming to ease transport challenges in the capital. This move involves scaling down long-distance routes, such as those to Kumasi and Cape Coast, to allocate more buses to high-demand intracity routes like Adenta, Kasoa, Amasaman, and Nsawam. The decision follows directives from the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to support private transport operators during peak hours. MMTL is currently operating with a limited fleet of 115 buses, down from over 1,000 when it started in 2004, but is working to maximize available resources. This initiative aims to boost MMT’s operations, improve service coverage, and reduce congestion pressures in major urban centers. “We are committed to improving transport services in Accra and ensuring that our buses are deployed where they are most needed,” said an MMTL spokesperson. The public is encouraged to take advantage of the enhanced intracity services, and MMTL apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the reduction in intercity services.

Bribery Allegation: Appiah-Kubi accuses OSP officials of unethical conduct, calls for legal training

Asante Akim North MP, Kwame Andy Appiah-Kubi has expressed grave concerns regarding the actions of Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) staff members following the conclusion of the probe into his claims of bribery.

Accusing them of unethical practices, Appiah-Kubi insists that the OSP officials lacked a proper understanding of professional ethics and needed legal training.

During the interrogation by OSP officials regarding the bribery claims against a wealthy businessman and 80 members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament, Appiah-Kubi alleges that the officials adopted a hostile attitude.

He claims they even engaged in a physical confrontation and ordered him to listen to his interview with Joy FM during the investigation, a move he deems unethical.

“The OSP officials started fighting me, so I decided to remain silent. They had already come to me with a hostile attitude even in the precincts of Parliament, and they asked the other MPs who came to leave,” Appiah-Kubi revealed.

He emphasized the need for courtesy in such proceedings, stating, “The OSP officials did not understand the ethics of the profession that you need to show courtesy to everyone who comes before you. This intimidatory approach and the disrespect to the other MPs who were asked to leave was not helpful.”

The Special Prosecutor (SP), Kissi Agyebeng, directed the closure of the investigation into the bribery allegations, citing that criminal proceedings at this time would not serve any useful purpose. The SP left the door open for future investigations, stating, “The investigation may be re-opened should the circumstances and further facts so dictate.”

Appiah-Kubi had alleged that a wealthy businessman attempted to bribe him and 79 of his fellow NPP MPs to halt their efforts to seek the removal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from office.
