Algerian clubs have knocked out Ghanaian clubs 14 times in their previous 15 knockout ties.

The only time a Ghanaian club managed to knockout an Algerian side in a knockout tie was 39 years ago when Hearts of Oak knocked out USK Algiers from the defunct Cup Winners Cup and to date it still remains the only occasion a Ghanaian side has managed to knockout any Algerian club after two legs.

After losing 2-1 against USK Algiers in their 1982 Cup Winners Cup quarterfinal first leg in Algiers, Hearts won the second leg 2 – 0 to win the tie 3 – 2 on aggregate.

Midfielder Clement Adu gave Hearts the lead in the 6th minute. He beat an offside trap to score amid defeaning cheers.

Nine minutes into the second half, Joe Amoateng trapped a ball from midfield and looked for good-old Robert Hammond. The former Ghanaian international sent a perfect pass to left winger Kwadade and there was nothing advancing USK Algiers goalkeeper Kesraomi Mohamed could do about the splendid low grounder which followed.

The first and and the only line – up to knockout an Algerian club from CAF Inter Club competition by a Ghanaian club.

Tettevi (GK), Ofei, Hesse, S. Lamptey, Sulley, Adu, Ayipe/Sowah, Commey, Hammond, Amoateng and Kwadade

Since that victory the Algerian clubs have won 13 consecutive knockout ties against Ghanaian clubs. Hearts of Oak themselves have since lost two knockout ties against Algerian sides.
