Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, together with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. William Agyapong, visited the El-Wak Sports Stadium to examine new safety measures introduced for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
The inspection followed the resumption of the exercise on Thursday, November 20, eight days after a fatal stampede at the venue claimed six lives and left several applicants injured. President John Dramani Mahama had earlier directed the temporary suspension of the process to allow for a thorough safety review.
During the visit, the committee, led by chairman James Agalga, assessed a more controlled system of applicant screening. Applicants were now seated to prevent overcrowding, while officers supervised biometric verification, documentation checks and physical assessments.
GAF has also introduced multiple screening centres and imposed a strict daily limit on the number of applicants allowed into the facility to avoid congestion.
More monitoring is expected in the coming days as the Defence Committee continues to track adherence to the updated protocols.
