The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has officially called off its two-month-long strike, as announced in a statement on Tuesday, August 20. However, the association has issued a stern warning to the government, stating that if the agreed-upon roadmap is not followed, the strike will resume on October 31, 2024.

The strike, which began on June 14, was sparked by the government’s failure to implement arbitral awards and improve working conditions for CETAG members, as previously agreed upon. While the association has temporarily suspended industrial action, it remains vigilant and prepared to take further action if its demands are not met.

In a statement, CETAG disclosed that an emergency virtual National Council meeting was held on August 20, 2024, where members unanimously voted to suspend the strike, effective immediately.

Additionally, the association outlined a clear roadmap of expectations that the government must fulfill to avoid a repeat of the industrial action. This roadmap serves as a condition for the strike’s suspension, emphasizing CETAG’s commitment to holding the government accountable for its agreements.

  1. The July and August 2024 salaries, which were previously frozen, shall be paid together by the end of August 2024.
  2. The offline migration of staff shall be completed by the end of August 2024.
  3. The offline migration data shall be sent to all 46 colleges of education for individual staff verification before being processed by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) in September 2024.
  4. Payment after migration shall be reflected in the October 2024 salaries. A meeting shall be held between the parties to agree on a payment plan for all arrears.
  5. The nomenclature for migrating Senior Members of the Teaching staff shall be as follows: Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Senior Lecture, Associate Professor, Professor. This is in line with the affiliate universities’ Scheme of Service.
  6. Compensation for all-year-round work done in 2022 shall be paid by the end of August 2024.
  7. All holders of researched Master’s degrees shall be migrated as Assistant Lecturers.
