The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after successfully meeting his GH₵50 million bail conditions.

Wontumi’s release comes after his legal team withdrew a motion at the High Court that sought a review of the bail conditions, arguing they were excessive and had prolonged his detention despite fulfilling the requirements by May 30.

The motion was scheduled for hearing on June 3 but was officially withdrawn on June 2, paving the way for his release.

Wontumi was initially invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for interrogation on May 27 and later taken into custody by EOCO for further investigations.

His continued detention sparked public outrage and political demonstrations.

On May 29, Minority Members of Parliament staged a walkout and marched to the EOCO headquarters, protesting his prolonged custody arguing that, given his public stature and low flight risk, he should have been granted self-recognizance bail.

Supporters of the NPP also gathered outside EOCO’s offices, blocking roads and demanding his release.

With legal challenges now resolved and bail conditions met, EOCO has freed Chairman Wontumi, bringing an end to a week of intense political tensions and legal battles.
