Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Tong Defa has highlighted Ghana’s significant strides in advancing gender equality and strengthening bilateral relations with China, describing President John Mahama’s recent visit to Beijing as a major milestone in diplomatic cooperation.
Reflecting on the visit, Ambassador Defa said he had the honour of accompanying President Mahama during his engagements in China, which he described as “one of the highlights in our bilateral relations” given the media attention and the depth of discussions held.
He emphasized that President Mahama’s participation in the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, offered Ghana a major platform to showcase its achievements in promoting women’s rights and gender equality.
He noted that President Mahama delivered an impactful address at the opening session, outlining Ghana’s progress, including the historic milestone of having its first female Vice President, an achievement applauded globally.
“Ghana, together with countries around the world, reaffirmed its commitment to doing more to advance cooperation on gender equality and women’s empowerment,” he said.
H.E Tong Defa highlighted that bilateral discussions between President Mahama and Chinese President Xi Jinping were “highly successful and productive,” with both leaders outlining a clear roadmap for deepened cooperation.
President Xi noted that China-Ghana relations, built by earlier generations have grown stronger and remain rooted in sincerity, mutual respect, and practical cooperation.
He emphasized that,
China supports Ghana’s chosen path of modernization.
“Both countries will work to expand collaboration in mining, energy, infrastructure, agriculture and fisheries”
