David Apasera challenges PNC congress results, cites electoral irregularities

Defeated flagbearer hopeful of the People’s National Convention (PNC), David Apasera has rejected the results of the party’s 2024 National Congress, which was held to elect its national executives ahead of the December 7 general elections.

In an interview with Kwadwo Safah-Danquah on the Happy Morning Show on Monday, September 9, 2024, Mr. Apasera expressed that even the 216 votes he got was due to his popularity within the party. He also alleged irregularities, including voting by former General Secretary Janet Nabla who is no longer a member of the party and reported that voting did not take place in certain regions such as Western and Western North, where he claims to have evidence.

Mr. Apasera claimed that Bernard Mornah and the Electoral Commission (EC) conspired to sabotage his candidacy for the party’s presidential slot.

He explained that while he was on the campaign trail, he was informed on Wednesday about a writ summons filed against him and the party with him named as the second defendant because of his leadership role within the party. He then returned to Accra on Friday to review the writ, which sought an injunction against the PNC.

Following legal advice, Mr. Apasera attempted to reach out to the plaintiff to withdraw the case. He also contacted the EC, requesting a postponement of the congress to give him time to resolve the issue. The EC requested a formal written request, which he submitted along with the court documents. Despite assurances from EC officials about changing the date, Mr. Apasera claimed that Mark Ewusi, an associate of Bernard Mornah, dispatched ballot papers without proper oversight.

He emphasized that his objections are not rooted in his personal defeat but rather in the need to correct what he views as significant wrongdoings to prevent them from recurring.
