The Upper Denkyira East Director of NADMO, Lawson Awanga, has urged residents living in flood-prone areas of Dunkwa-on-Offin to relocate to safer grounds as the rainy season intensifies.

Speaking during a joint dredging exercise by the Assembly and NADMO to clear rivers and gutters in the area, Mr. Awanga identified communities such as Barrier, Aquakrom, Sofokrom, and Accratown as high-risk zones.

He stressed the importance of prioritizing safety by moving to higher ground to protect lives and property.

Mr. Awanga noted that while NADMO’s mandate is to prevent and protect, the organization does not have the capacity to shelter everyone in these vulnerable areas.

He attributed the recurrent flooding to several factors, including illegal mining, encroachment into waterways, choked drains due to human activities, and natural causes.

The NADMO Director also advised residents to take basic safety precautions—such as switching off electrical appliances during heavy rains to prevent electrocution—and to remain alert and personally responsible during the season, as more rains are expected.

Mr. Awanga made a passionate appeal to the public, corporate bodies, and stakeholders to support NADMO with essential logistics such as motorbikes, life jackets, and reflectors.

He revealed that with only one motorbike available for the entire municipality, it has become extremely difficult for his team to patrol and respond promptly to emergencies.

He called on the public to come to their aid and provide the needed resources to help NADMO operate more effectively.
