The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has clarified that the current vehicle onboarding process attracts a GH¢25 fee, covering only biodata verification, as part of preparations to roll out a new digital licence plate system later this year.

In a statement, the Authority explained that vehicle onboarding is an ongoing exercise that began fully in 2024 and has been intensified due to its critical role in migrating all manually registered vehicles onto a digital registration platform.

The process supports the planned implementation of the digital licence plate system once amendments to L.I. 2180 are passed.

According to the DVLA, the onboarding exercise requires the presence of the vehicle owner and the vehicle, alongside registration documents, Customs Bill of Entry, and the Ghana Card of the vehicle owner for biodata verification.

The Authority noted that the full onboarding cost of GH¢288.55, which includes the issuance of a Certificate of Title and a Vehicle Registration Card (VRC) has been reviewed in light of the upcoming licence plate changes.

Consequently, a reduced fee of GH¢25 has been approved solely to enable biodata verification and successful migration onto the digital platform.

DVLA stressed that the GH¢25 fee does not come with a Certificate of Title or VRC. These documents will be available later during the acquisition of the new licence plates when the rollout begins.

While acknowledging the importance of the Certificate of Title and VRC in establishing ownership, preventing fraud and theft, facilitating insurance acquisition, and maintaining accurate vehicle history, the Authority said clients who require these services due to their circumstances may apply for them.

Applications will also be available at all DVLA offices during the issuance of the new number plates.

DVLA further cautioned that no client should be charged more than GH¢25 during the current onboarding process.

Members of the public are advised to deal directly with DVLA officers, insist on official receipts, and report any staff who demand fees beyond the stated amount.

Complaints can be lodged via 0203226006 or info@dvla.gov.gh.

The Authority thanked the general public for their cooperation and support throughout the exercise.
