Legendary Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, has described the much deliberated and discussed Electronic Transaction Tax (E-levy) law as the best remedy to Ghana’s economic woes.

Speaking on the ‘Dryve of your Lyfe’ show with Nana Quasi-Wusu (PM) on Y 97.9 FM, Dumelo said, his only concern of the new tax law was the 1.5%, adding that ‘It needs to be revised.

“I really find nothing wrong with E-levy, but what I find wrong is probably the percentage, the 1.5% on transactions is too high. I think they should just revise the law in order to suit Ghanaians”, he said.

John, who contested the Ayawaso-West Wougoun parliamentary seat on the ticket of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2020 described the e-levy as step in the right the direction.

“Taxation is not bad, taxation is good and I find nothing wrong with it. Citizens must pay their taxes and for a country that most citizens are trying to avoid paying taxes, I think we have to find innovative ways of collecting the taxes”, he added.

The E-levy bill was passed on March 29 ,2022 despite a Minority walk out in parliament and received presidential assent into law on March 31st. The levy comes as a cushion to Ghana’s economic hardships and it expected to raise about GH¢6.9 billion this year.
