The Ghana Police Service has served notice that it will arrest anyone found at any beach during the period of the restriction of movements in the country meant to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

“In accordance with the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 2020 (Act 1012) and consequential orders, the public is to note that gathering at any beach in Ghana amounts to an offence,” the police said in a statement.

However, members of the security services and essential service providers whose presence would ensure security or public safety are exempted.

The statement comes on the back of media reports that hundreds of residents of Chorkor in Accra defied the ban on social gatherings and besieged the beach in their community on Sunday.

With Easter Monday being one of the busiest days for revellers who throng the beaches for picnics, the police statement is a forewarning as the country seeks to break the chain of coronavirus spread.

As of Sunday, April 12, 566 cases have been confirmed with the Volta and Western regions joining the case count.
