The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Kwame Agyeman-Budu has stated that ECG is not aware of any E-Prepaid App that existed before the launch of the ECG mobile app known as the ‘ECG Power’.

On March 22nd,2018, a story with headline ‘Origgin Releases E-Prepaid App To Help You Buy Credit for ECG Smart Meter’ stated that Orrigin Limited had created an app that will enable users of electricity smart meters within Accra purchase electricity credit for their smart meters directly from their smart phones.

However, in an interview on the Happy Morning Show aired on Happy 98.9FM, the Managing Director of ECG stated: “I don’t know about any other app that was serving our customers. Nobody can use our system without our knowledge”.

He thus focused on the fact that ECG’s app that was developed in-house was a milestone for the company.

“For over a year, we had already began piloting the ECG mobile app called ECG Power. The app was developed in-house by our own staff, our ICT staff together with the marketing and the PR. We communicated to the vice president the importance of the app and he willingly came to launch the app for us”, he said.

Speaking on the convenience of the app, he said: “The app is so convenient. We put the power into the hands of our customers. We have about 3.8 million customers, out of that we have 2.1 million customers with post-paid meters and 1.7 million pre-paid meters. The app is serving all our customers because we have a USSD that you can dial *226# and you will be able to purchase credit for your phone. In doing that the customer can sit conveniently in his or her house and purchase power at any time, any seconds. A customer can also purchase for a family member or a friend. The app is also helpful in a sense that you can make a complaint and you can even send a picture to our customer care to handle it”.

In a speech at the first ever Government’s Town Hall Meeting held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, the Vice President stated that the Government of Ghana will, on the 18th of February, 2020, launch a mobile application for the payment of electricity bills.

The mobile application designed to make the purchase of electricity credits and the payment of bills more convenient for customers was launched yesterday in Accra.
