Election 2024: I will sponsor Mahama for NDC flagbearership – Chairman Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chair of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako known in political circles as Chairman Wontumi, says he prefers former President Mahama to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in its bid to secure the presidency in the 2024 presidential elections.

According to him, he will do all in his power, even sponsor the former president so he emerges victorious at the party’s primaries to elect its leaders.

This move he admits will benefit the NPP and pave the way for his party to make history by becoming the first political party to lead Ghana for more than two consecutive terms.

“I am going to use Mahama to delay the NDC’s chances at the presidency. I will sponsor him and delay the quality leaders that may pose a threat to the NPP’s break the 8 agenda. I will do everything in my power to help Mahama emerge victorious at the NDC’s internal elections,” he told Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah.

He believes doing this will save Ghana from the disappointment and frustration the opposition party will make Ghana suffer. “The NPP would’ve developed Ghana drastically if Kufuor was succeeded by President Akufo-Addo. But because the NDC took over from Kufuor, Ghana’s rate of development stalled.”

With the NDC having led Ghana for over 24 years, Chairman Wontumi says the NDC can only be recognized for its negativity and nothing more.

“A new flagbearer for the NDC will make promises which the Ghanaian populace will believe but promises from Mahama will be questioned because he has been tried and tested and Ghana knows his worth. For our break the 8 agenda to be realized, I will sponsor Mahama for the NDC flagbearership.”

His comments comes after the former president’s Thank You Tour in the Ashanti Region.

Former President John Mahama stormed the Ashanti Region on Sunday, September 12 as part of his nationwide Thank You tour.

The two-day tour of the Region marked the end of the second phase of his tour, which was to express gratitude to his supporters and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the votes in the December 7, 2020 elections.
