Environmental Health Officers urge immediate action amid rising cholera deaths

The Unposted Environmental Health Officers and Assistants Association of Ghana has called for urgent action in response to the devastating cholera outbreak that has gripped the nation since October 24, 2024.

In an exclusive interview with Happyghana.com, the association’s National PRO, Jacob Addai, expressed deep sorrow over the lives lost and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

He lamented the severe impact of the outbreak, emphasizing that it highlights longstanding concerns about the neglect of Ghana’s Environmental Health sector.

Mr. Addai pointed out that, for over four years, trained environmental health professionals from three leading hygiene schools have remained unemployed. He stressed that their deployment could have strengthened public health education efforts and helped curb the spread of diseases like cholera.

He further noted that the backlog of graduates from 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 has exacerbated Ghana’s sanitation crisis, leaving communities vulnerable to preventable illnesses.

Mr. Addai criticized the government for failing to integrate these trained professionals into the workforce and called for their immediate deployment, arguing that their presence could have significantly mitigated the current cholera outbreak.
