The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has safely disposed of a large consignment of opioid drugs valued at GH¢20 million, following a directive from the Tema High Court.

The drugs, seized at the Tema Port on March 14, 2025, included 230 cartons of unregistered opioid-containing medications such as Tafradol, Timaking Tapentadol, and Rahol Tapentadol.

The disposal exercise took place at a private incinerator in Ashaiman, Greater Accra Region, in the presence of officials from the FDA, Ministry of Health, Narcotics Control Commission, and other regulatory agencies.

FDA CEO, Dr. Delese Mimi Darko, emphasized the authority’s commitment to protecting public health and safety by removing these potentially harmful drugs from circulation. “The FDA remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the health of Ghanaians,” she said.

The disposal of these opioid drugs marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to combat substance abuse and protect its citizens from the dangers of illicit drugs.
