The Head Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church in Diaso, Rev. Emmanuel Baba Asim, has expressed grave concern over the growing threat of food insecurity in Ghana, attributing the crisis to the rise in illegal mining activities commonly known as ‘galamsey’ across the Upper Denkyira West District.

Speaking during the National Day of Prayers and Thanksgiving, hosted at the Diaso branch of the church and attended by district officials, Rev. Asim expressed deep concern over the reckless destruction of arable land in areas such as Diaso, Ayenfuri, and surrounding communities.

If we continue at this pace destroying the land for gold while neglecting farming then we are planting the seeds of hunger for the future,” he said.

While he acknowledged that completely halting galamsey may be difficult, the pastor pleaded with miners to adopt more responsible and sustainable practices that preserve the land and the region’s forest reserves.

District Chief Executive (DCE) for Upper Denkyira West, Hon. Isaac Nsiah who was also present at the event expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for promoting national unity through initiatives like the prayer gathering. The DCE extended his appreciation to the security services, party officials, church leaders, and members who actively participated in the event.

Hon. Nsiah took the opportunity to caution the youth in the district against drug abuse.

He stressed that the police are on high alert and will arrest anyone caught in possession or consumption of illegal substances.

“The future of this district depends on our young people. They need guidance, not drugs”, he emphasized.
