The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic shooting incident that occurred at the Garu D/A Primary and Junior High School on Monday, October 20, 2025, resulting in the death of the school’s Headteacher, Mr. Bukhari Yahaya.

In a statement signed by Mr. Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, Management described the incident as a “cruel and needless act of violence”, stressing that schools must remain safe environments for teaching and learning, not scenes of tragedy.

“Such acts have no place in our educational system and will not be tolerated,” the statement read.

GES extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, staff, and students of the school, as well as the entire Garu education community, assuring them of its support during this difficult period.

As part of immediate measures, the GES has temporarily closed down the school from Tuesday, October 21 to Monday, October 27, 2025, to allow both staff and students to recover from the trauma.

The Guidance and Counselling Unit of the District Education Directorate has also been tasked to provide psychosocial support to affected individuals.

The Service further noted that it is working closely with the District Security Council (DISEC) and other security agencies to ensure safety as investigations into the incident continue.

GES has urged residents of Garu to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as efforts are made to restore peace and normalcy to the school.
