Muntari Tagoe, one of the Ghanaian footballers stranded in Ethiopia has told Happy Sports that the Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has contacted the group for their details following last Tuesday’s petition to be airlifted home.

As reported by Happy Sports, 22 Ghanaian footballers have been stranded in Ethiopia following the closure of the borders in Ghana due to measures put in place by the government to curb the spread and importation of the coronavirus.

The players led by former Black Stars defender Lee Addy were seen in a viral video appealing to the government to be airlifted back home as their standard of living amid the pandemic may worsen should their stay in the East African country prolong.

In an interview with Ohene-Bampoe Brenya on Happy Sports on Happy 98.9FM, former Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Muntari Tagoe said they have received a response from the Ghana Football Association following the appeals made which went viral.

“The GFA Deputy General Secretary Alex Asante called Lee Addy yesterday for our details and the number of players who want to come home. The Embassy also called us to enquire the number of players who want to come home. So we are still waiting for a response”

“We have been staying in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, for several weeks and we were hoping to be home by June 30 that is why we pleaded with the officials to allow us to come home because we all have our tickets”.

Former Black Stars defender Lee Addy who is among the players stranded in Ethiopia also said, “We are happy about the response we have received so far after our plea. We thank everybody for the support.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Sports Ministry, Kenneth Annan, talks are ongoing to ensure the players are brought back home.
