The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to consult government and health officials before deciding to truncate the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League, according to reports in the media.

The 2019/20 football season was suspended in March this year due to the coronavirus outbreak which led the government to suspended all social gathering including sporting activities.

The GFA held a virtual meeting last week with the various stakeholders to discuss issues on varied topics from financial support to clubs, renovation of the GFA Headquarters, GFA’s engagement with the government of Ghana for a share of the COVID-19 stimulus package, the decision to give Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence to help the government in the fight against COVID-19, the 2019/20 season.

According to reports, the majority of the clubs have called for the season to be suspended as there is no data to determine when football can be given the green light to return.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to consult the Ministry of Youth and Sports before taking a final decision to cancel the 2019/20 football season.

The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), is also engaging the various stakeholders before issuing out a statement on behalf of the club, according to the Vice-Chairman, Alex Ackumey.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA), General Secretary, Dr Justice Yankson has also advised the GFA to truncate the season.

“At this point in line with measures by the President, we will be breaching the rules if football is allowed to go on. Football is a contact game and one of the preventive measures is to practice social distancing. As it stands now we haven’t been able to reduce the community spread and in line with what FIFA and the UEFA has done, we should hasten slowly and try not to play the game as soon as possible”, he said in an interview.

The GFA have up to Tuesday May 5 to respond to CAF on the future of the Ghana Premier League.
