The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially unveiled Kim Lars Björkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens. The appointment marks a new chapter for the team following the departure of former coach Nora Hauptle.

The unveiling ceremony was held in Accra and was attended by key GFA officials, including Executive Council Members Gideon Fosu and Samuel Aboabire, General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo, Technical Director Professor Joseph Mintah, and assistant coach Anita Wiredu Mintah.

Björkegren, a seasoned Swedish tactician with 18 years of coaching experience, brings a wealth of knowledge to the role. He has previously coached in Sweden, China, and the United States, achieving notable success with clubs like Apollon Ladies (Cyprus Women’s League champions) and Linköpings FC (Swedish Damallsvenskan champions).

Executive Council member Gideon Fosu expressed confidence in Björkegren’s ability to elevate the Black Queens, highlighting his expertise in women’s football and his background in education and sports psychology as key strengths.

“We believe that Coach Björkegren has the experience and the vision to take the Black Queens to the next level,” Fosu stated. “His track record speaks for itself, and we are confident that he will bring a fresh perspective and a winning mentality to the team.”

Björkegren will soon embark on a 10-day training tour in Morocco, where the team will play an international friendly against the Moroccan national team and a club side in Casablanca. This tour will serve as valuable preparation for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled for July.

Ghana has been drawn into Group C alongside reigning champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania. Björkegren’s immediate focus will be on guiding the team through a rigorous training camp and preparing them to compete at the highest level in Morocco.
