Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso constituency, Stephen Amoah, has revealed that the NDC government has already plunged Ghana into debt totaling about 59 billion Ghana cedis.

Addressing the media at a press conference held shortly after President Mahama’s State of the Nation address in Parliament earlier today, Mr. Amoah stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a proven track record of better economic management compared to any NDC administration.

He refuted President Mahama’s claim that his administration inherited a collapsed economy. “It is common knowledge that our economy is in dire stress, which is putting it mildly because, upon an initial assessment of the books, we have discovered that our economic problems are much deeper than previously known.” the President said.

Mr. Amoah argued that the President failed to acknowledge the efforts of the previous government, which he described as “unprecedented, given the global economic crisis.”

He emphasized that the government’s attempt to settle existing debts has only worsened Ghana’s financial situation, despite being in office for just 50 days.

“They actually inherited a better economy. All the payments he is talking about—where did they get the money from? Within this shortest possible time, they have borrowed almost 59 billion Ghana cedis in just 50 days. In less than two months, Mahama’s administration has borrowed 59 billion, which is unprecedented.”

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to building a proactive economy that leverages Ghana’s youthful population to drive development and promote sustainable living for all Ghanaians.
