President John Dramani Mahama has announced renewed efforts by government to clamp down on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, while urging stronger collaboration with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
Speaking during an engagement with Civil Society Organisations on Monday, March 30, the President acknowledged the critical role CSOs continue to play in environmental protection and climate advocacy.
He noted that government is scaling up measures to tackle galamsey and ensure the sustainable management of the country’s natural resources.
President Mahama stressed that partnerships with civil society will be essential in protecting land and water bodies for future generations.
“Civil Society has led in environmental protection, climate advocacy, and the fight against illegal mining. Government is intensifying efforts to combat galamsey, promote sustainable land and water use and strengthen environmental governance,” he said.
He added that closer collaboration between government and civil society is necessary to safeguard natural resources, emphasizing that CSOs are partners in national development rather than adversaries.
