After nearly a decade in detention, Gregory Afoko, a key suspect in the 2015 murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, has been granted bail by the High Court in Accra.

The court set bail at GH₵500,000 with two sureties, marking a significant development in a case that has spanned almost 10 years.

Afoko filed a fresh bail application before the Accra High Court on February 17, making it his third attempt to secure bail during the nine-year trial.

Mr. Afoko arrested in 2015 was accused of conspiring with others to assassinate Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his Bolgatanga home. His trial began in 2019 and concluded in 2023, but the jury returned a hung verdict on both counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. As a result, the court ordered a retrial.

Following the proceedings, Afoko was re-arrested and denied bail. However, on Friday, February 21, 2025, his lawyers successfully moved for his release pending trial.

While the bail decision marks progress for Afoko’s defense, the state’s prosecution remains ongoing.
