Medeama SC’s sensational striker, Jonathan Sowah, received his maiden call-up to represent the Black Stars in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against the Central African Republic (CAR).

The 24-year-old football prodigy has been turning heads with his outstanding performances for Medeama, which have now earned him a spot in Chris Hughton’s 25-man squad.

Jonathan Sowah’s meteoric rise to prominence began during the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season when he played a pivotal role in leading Medeama SC to their first-ever league trophy.

His remarkable contribution to the team included an impressive tally of 12 goals in 18 appearances. One of the defining moments of his campaign came in the CAF Champions League clash against Remo Stars, where he scored a crucial goal at the Cape Coast Stadium, ultimately helping Medeama secure victory in a thrilling shootout following a 1-1 aggregate scoreline in Nigeria.

The news of his Black Stars call-up left Sowah emotional, as he revealed, “I cried when I received the call.” This call-up has made him the second local-based player to join the national squad under Hughton’s guidance, following in the footsteps of Hafiz Konkoni, who received a late call-up several months ago.

Notably, a day after Sowah was handed this debut call-up, he showcased his exceptional talent once again by inspiring Medeama to a remarkable victory. He scored two goals in the first half of the match, and despite a late comeback attempt by Dreams FC, Medeama held their ground and clinched yet another trophy.

Now, Jonathan Sowah finds himself in the esteemed company of notable forwards like Inaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo, Jordan Ayew, Ernest Nuamah, Osman Bukari, and Joseph Painstil, all of whom will be striving to help the Black Stars secure qualification in their crucial clash against CAR at the Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday, September 7.

This upcoming match promises to be a high-stakes encounter, as Ghana must avoid defeat to secure their spot in the highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations tournament, while CAR will be fighting tooth and nail for a victory that would grant them the same privilege.
