The interim National Chairman of the United Party Abubakar Siddique Boniface, has revealed that he was set to become former President Akufo-Addo’s running mate but personally withdrew from the opportunity.

The shocking revelation which was made in an interview on Happy 98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show with Bismark Brown dates back to former President’s Akufo-Addo ambition to run as president of Ghana in 2008, where he indicated that his withdrawal from the position has been widely misconstrued since then.

“Many people have not gotten to know the truth about this running mate issue. Everyone has their interpretations of this running mate issue.” he said.

Alhaji Abubakar Siddique Boniface explained that his withdrawal was on account of rumors which speculated that he desired to be the running mate of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for selfish reasons and personal gain, what according to speculations, would leave Akufo-Addo unalive so that he could become President. “Regarding this running mate issue, I was a forerunner I was the only one going to be the running mate for Akufo-Addo; everyone knew about it. All of a sudden, rumors began emerging about an innate desire I carried to help Akufo-Addo win and then later kill him and then take his position as President.” he stated.

According to Alhaji Boniface, these rumors which increasingly drew in attention of many within the NPP party triggered the ultimate decision to withdraw as the running mate for former President Akufo-Addo. “Nana Addo is alive let’s go and ask him. When I heard the rumors, early in the morning as at 5:00AM I was at Nana Addo’s residence to tell him that I was no longer interested in being his running mate. I assured him that whatever he’d need from me to help him win would be provided but for me, I was no longer interested…”
